Islam Makhachev To Get Welterweight Title Shot If He Defends Lightweight Title Against Justin Gaethje

Islam Makhachev is set to face Justin Gaethje next in a highly anticipated UFC lightweight title defense. Gaethje, fresh off a unanimous decision win over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313, has positioned himself as a top contender and has openly called for a title shot against Makhachev.

Makhachev’s camp, including his coach Javier Mendez, has also expressed openness to Gaethje as the next opponent, noting that Gaethje is a big-name contender who offers a fresh stylistic challenge, unlike some recent title defenses against familiar foes.

UFC CEO Dana White has indicated that Gaethje has a good chance to fight Makhachev next, especially given Gaethje’s recent performances and ranking.

Justin Gaethje himself has expressed readiness to fight Makhachev as soon as June 2025, emphasizing his desire for the title shot and confidence after his UFC 313 victory.

Regarding the welterweight division, sources suggest that if Makhachev successfully defends his lightweight title against Gaethje, he will likely pursue a welterweight championship match next.

Islam Makhachev vs. Justin Gaethje is the expected next lightweight title fight, with strong support from UFC officials, commentators, and both fighters.
