WrestleMania 41 is already shaping up to be one of the greatest editions of WWE’s biggest event, and it is making history. For the first time in his illustrious career, CM Punk is going to main event WrestleMania, a significant milestone nearly 20 years in the making. The news was confirmed on the March 28 edition of WWE SmackDown, and it created serious buzz in the WWE Universe. CM Punk is scheduled to take his dream match in a triple threat contest against Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. The fight will take place on Night 1 during WrestleMania 41, and the fans will definitely be in for a blockbuster match.
Not all storylines have been elevated on the Road to WrestleMania. Jey Uso, the winner of the 2025 Royal Rumble, saw himself moved down the card in lieu of a match against Gunther. The move drew varied responses and continued the debate of what a “main event” is in today’s WWE at WrestleMania.

A Dream Fulfilled: CM Punk’s Long-Awaited WrestleMania Main Event
CM Punk comeback to WWE in late 2023 and upon his return made it clear that his goal is to main event WrestleMania. But the March 28, 2025 edition of SmackDown is where all that emotion really peaked, when we saw the contract signing with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.
Paul Heyman confirmed during the signing that the main event for Night 1 of WrestleMania 41 would be a Triple Threat match between the three wrestlers. At that point we could see how much the whole environment was affecting Punk, as he expressed thanks to Reigns. He mentioned how this was not a favor but rather an opportunity for which he had been working for an extremely long time.
CM Punk’s career has been a winding path of peaks, valleys, controversies, and absences, but this mark is a gold star. After almost 20 years in WWE, countless legendary matches, and promos that shook the foundation of WWE, there was one thing he had never done: headline the “Show of Shows.” As of April 19 in Las Vegas, that will change.
WrestleMania 41 Night 2: John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes for Undisputed WWE Championship
As CM Punk earns the main event for Night 1, Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 will have another major confrontation that could be just as significant: Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The match features two of WWE’s biggest stars in a storyline that connects generations of wrestling. John Cena, a wrestling legend, takes on Cody Rhodes, who is looking to “break the record” and become a 17-time world champion himself.
The split-headliner format enables WWE to promote two major matches without compromising either match’s effectiveness. The definition of “main event of the night” versus “main event of the weekend” is a continual evolution process, and not solely for everybody’s benefit.

Jey Uso vs. Gunther Demoted: What Went Wrong?
Initially penciled in as a possible main event after Jey Uso won the Royal Rumble, the match between Uso and Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship has now been moved down the card. The move is attributed to a handful of things:
One of the weaker feuds – When put alongside more emotionally-fulfilling stories with Punk, Reigns, Rollins, Cena, and Rhodes, the Uso-Gunther feud has been described by fans to be boring and repetitive at times. Gunther has already defeated Jey on multiple occasions, which doesn’t help it feel unpredictable or urgent.
Gunther’s Displeasure – Behind the scenes, word has it that Gunther himself was not entirely happy with the match. From his standpoint, it is simply a step back since he and Jey had faced the each other multiple times. Gunther wanted a bigger challenge since he wanted to increase his legacy.
Fan Fatigue – Jey Uso may still have a fan following today, although not having fresh storytelling with multiple losses has led to some fans feeling apathetic regarding the story. There have been an increased calls for better writing and for surprises in the matches but were all mostly ignored.
WWE Universe Reacts: Cheers for Punk, Concerns for Tradition
Many in the WWE Universe have celebrated CM Punk’s ascension to the WrestleMania main event as a well-deserved success. Between his heartfelt reaction, the stakes in the match with Reigns’ involvement, the match featuring Rollins, and the overall size of the match, there is now a buzz for Night 1 of WrestleMania. For many of Punk’s longtime fans, this is the payoff they have wanted for about 20 years. Not every fan is happy.
Jey Uso fan’s, are perhaps the most disappointed WWE put the Royal Rumble winner on the sidelines of the main event spotlight. As per some fans the creative team should have ensured the victor gets the main event spot, in some way shape or form, in the freaking main event night of WrestleMania. If you ask some people, WWE is putting the star power or name recognition of main evening WrestleMania over the established booking traditions.

With a card that showcases CM Punk’s dream match, and Gunther defending his title against Jey Uso, WrestleMania 41 will indeed be one colossal two-night event. Tradition may be changing, but the buzz has not changed at all.
